## What is the standard deviation?

The standard deviation is a crucial statistical measure that quantifies a dataset’s dispersion or variation.

It indicates how closely data points are clustered around the mean, revealing the data’s degree of consistency or spread.

A small standard deviation suggests that data points are tightly grouped. In contrast, a large standard deviation indicates that they are more dispersed.

In various fields such as finance, social sciences, and natural sciences, the standard deviation helps analysts and researchers make informed decisions, identify trends, and evaluate the reliability of their findings.

**The standard deviation is calculated as follows:**

**1.** Calculate the mean (average) of the dataset.

**2.** Subtract the mean from each value in the dataset to obtain the deviations.

**3.** Square each of these deviations.

**4.** Calculate the mean of the squared deviations. This is called the variance.

**5.** Take the square root of the variance to get the standard deviation.
